This has been a sad week for Martial Arts film fans, first with the passing of Lau Kar Leung and now Grandmaster Jim Kelly aka Black Belt Jones. We found out via Lee Van Cleef's site this morning about 67 year old Kelly's Passing. Rest in peace to Mr. Williams aka The Black Dragon.

Short and sweet.... If your ever in Nashville, the only party that you need attend is The Boom Bap. Case closed
Thursday, June 27, 2013
Last weekends trip to Nashville, TN for The Boom Bap was an amazing trip, so much good energy from the crowd and Nashville definitely knows how to party. Was great to finally rock with the homies Case Bloom, Rate and Bowls to a packed house that was in full swing by 11pm. Of course with all travels there must be some digging, weather at flea markets, Goodwill or private record dealers home you gotta get it where you can get it. And of course, whenever you in town then you need to try Hot Chicken! No not hot as in out of the oven but as in you sweating unnaturally from the intense heat of the spice. Just ask Oprah Winfrey or the locals about it.
Last week Hot Peas & Butta's own Big Pimp Jones performed sets at the Bay Area's Godzilla Night 2 Film Fest. Godzilla Night is known for a double feature screening of 2 classic films and from time to time will showcase a band before and in between. Big Pimp Jones played two sets consisting of new material as well as tracks from their Kodoja: Terror Mountain Showdown 45 & Album (still available). If you like soundtracks then you need to check this out and also purchase their 45, Album and comic book.
Great interview with The RZA about what type of student he was in school, growing up having jobs, favorite cartoon characters, Wu Tangs next album and more. This is the type of things that artist should be talking about and what today's youth should be paying attention to.

Mark your calendar's Chicago because I'll be in your area next month to rock Soul Summit! Yes sir, I'll be toting along those Funk & Soul 45's to play for your dancing pleasure. In addition, I will also be curating the visuals for the night as well and if you've ever been to a Hot Peas & Butta party then you know how it's gonna go down!

For one time and one time only this Summer we're throwing down in Brooklyn at Macri Park Bar. You know the usual routine, Free BBQ (as long as your drinking), cheap beers, great DJ's spinning 45's, Spade and Dominos in the back courtyard.

For all the fans of Battle of The Planets / Gatchaman, the movie comes out later this Summer in Japan and looks good. Probably won't hit American anytime soon but I'll be heading to Japan later this year so I'm definitely going to catch it in theaters while I'm there.

Hands down, the only place that I need to DJ (and just hang out in general) when I hit Las Vegas is Insert Coins. I've had the pleasure of DJing there several times and it's always amazing, never a lame nose in the air crowd, the bar staff are cool as shit and so are the owners. Who else does an "open format" night in the city!? Last month I had the opportunity to spin there again and it says something when they know your steez and set up visuals for the evening that compliment what you spin and how you spin, now thats love right there! I don't know any venue that would go the extra mile to put together footage because I'm in town. Salute to Insert Coins, DJ 88 and all DJs and staff there!
Helsinki Finland has always been in my top 5 places to travel to, rock parties and have fun it. But after this weekend madness it's properly earned a permanent place in my top 3 destinations. Flow Mo anniversary was pure exactly what I expected times 10, the parties, the festive drinking, rocking the club and of course celebrating the 11 year anniversary. On this trip as usual we hung out at my favorite spot to rock, "We Got Beef" where much beer was consumed in a 2 hour period of time (plus I love walking out the club at 4am and the sun is already out!) you definitely lose all track of time. Then DJing at the anniversary party which pretty much was 95% women, with an incredible sound system which I put through the test.
A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to do a Q&A / Lecture and also to DJ in Detroit which was really amazing. But I would have to say the highlight of the trip was definitely hearing stories about the cities rich cultural history and how "Detroit" the people really are. The people that live there really take pride in their city and after visiting I realized that what you see in the media and what you think you know about the city is all wrong. You have to visit there to see that it's not what's being portrayed on TV and news. Most of my time walking around was in "Mexicantown" which is really refreshing because everything is Mexican owned Mom & Pop stores, Barbershops, restaurants, markets and bakeries. I also had the opportunity to see some of the parks and places where legendary Hip Hop and Bboy battles went down.
